The First Sign of Spring

The first sign of spring at my house is not tulip bulbs or little blades of green grass.  I know it is spring when my girls go outside and start building fairy houses all around the yard.

Fairy houses are whimsical little shelters, built of any combination of rocks, leaves, grass and flower petals and often stuck together with tree sap and pine needles.  They must be checked daily for fairy activity, which can consist of any number of clues, only to be limited by the imagination.  Don’t forget to leave fairy food and sometimes even a special welcome written on the back of a leaf or piece of bark.

Fairy houses can be built anywhere, but are most frequently accepted by fairies when they are hidden around the corners of the yard or at the bottom of a tree where they are sheltered.

Most importantly, never forget, that after you have finished your fairy house, and your mother has called you in for dinner and/or bedtime, DO NOT go back outside or even glance out a door or a window.  The fairies will be traveling and if seen, will immediately turn to dust!

(Trust me on this, I am living with fairy experts.)

For me, there is no better way to start spring than by sweeping “fairy dust” and “house bits” from the back porch and kitchen floor.  🙂
