In honor of being done, done, done, I have composed, er, revamped, a poem:
T’was the Day After Christmas And tho she’d had fun
Christmas was finished And Mom was undone
She wanted the stockings emptied and packed , She wanted St Nick boxed up and stacked.
The children were hauled Out of their beds,
Visions of sleeping-in yanked from their heads. With Mom in her apron, Dad in his work clothes
The party was over, the children supposed.
When in the garage there arose such a clatter, The kids foolishly ran to see what was the matter.
They opened the door and looked everywhere…The ladder they spotted drew their eyes to the air…
Dad was removing boxes and bins, Handing them down to unwitting minions…
“Now Melinda! And Jess! Now Dan! And Rachel!”
Dash away, Put away! Stash away all!”
To the top of the stairs And into the house
Take these boxes to Mom and don’t stop to grouse!
As roaches that scatter at the flick of a switch The children all fled, hoping to ditch
Mom was waiting, tho, disrupting their flight, Dispensing directions with happy delight.
In a twinkling she knew, it all would be gone. She’d loved it, but just how long could it go on?
The couch was all covered with wrappers and bows, The kitchen was sticky from cinnamon rolls
The paper was gone, and so were the treats, The budget was busted and so were the sweets.
Mom eyes how they twinkled, Dad’s smile, how great! The house was restored to it’s original state.
Everyone had a round little belly, from eating up candy, and pies, and red jelly.
A wink of Mom’s eye and the shake of her head, Soon gave all to know, they had veggies to dread.
She spoke not a word, but went straight to the store, And filled up with celery, broccoli and more.
And dishing up salad, in her clean residence, And giving them fiber, and vitamin defense,
She sprang to her feet, to her kids gave a whistle, and they went back to school like the down of a thistle.
But she heard them exclaim, ere they left with their gear,
“Christmas comes back, ev-er-y year!”
