I am getting ready for Miss 6’s birthday. I’ve got the presents- I bought them at Christmastime in a fit of very uncharacteristic planning ahead. Now I am working on my very favorite part of birthdays. The Birthday Cake.
As you know, fairies are very important around here. Miss 6 is practically a fairy herself:
See what I mean?
Of course she requested a fairy cake! How could she not?
As you know, fairies can be fickle (and she is!) but I aim to please. I want this cake to look absolutely ephemeral and I am going to use fondant. Isn’t fondant the weirdest stuff?? The recipes takes a little handful of melted marshmallows and tells you to knead a huge bag of powdered sugar into it. My kitchen was a mess when I was done. I had powdered sugar all over everywhere. Not to mention that you’ve got to use a lot of shortening, which melds into a pretty strong glue when mixed everywhere with powdered sugar and marshmallows. The most amazing part is when that handful of marshmallow actually does grow into a big batch of nonsticky, roll-out-able, usable, fondant. Incredible!
(No worries about the clean up, I scraped the counters with a spatula!)
Now that I’ve got the fondant ready and waiting, I’m planning to go to the cake decorating store and find some kind of sparkly edible spray to make is shiny and glimmery. (Just as soon as I can sneak out of this place without any kids dangling from my arms and legs, or following me. . .)
Yesterday, without leaving the house, (bless you Amazon!) I procured these little cuties to set on top of the cake:
If this cake turns out as magically as I hope it will, I’ll be posting pictures.
For now I guess I better get on with my day~ Tiny is hungry and she is starting to freak out about me sitting here instead of shoveling cereal into her mouth at the speed of light! Bye!
