Meditate

Well first of all, I totally apologize for not even posting last Wednesday. Things were a bit hairy here, and I hadn’t slept well for the past several nights, and I didn’t actually realize it was Wednesday until about 4pm that day…

Me: What day is it?

My kids: Mom! It’s Wednesday!

Me: Crap! What time is it?

My kids: I don’t know.

Me: Crap!

So, there you have it.

Anyway, I’m here today. And I was planning on  telling you how great meditating is. I have been doing it for a while now, and barring the occasional meditational snafu*…I do pretty well. It’s relaxing and enlightening.

Here’s how it works:

1. Find a quiet time and place.  (Note- As you may well imagine, with 6 kids at home, a daycare, 6 chickens, a cat and a husband, this proves somewhat difficult at times. I have noticed that on Thursdays, from 9:45 to 10:30pm works for me. Usually…)

2. Get comfortable. (Note: What I mean is, try to make sure you are not sitting on toys, sippy cups or tiny shoes. You can put on your jammies if you like. I like to meditate in my room, after I’ve threatened the children with death if they knock on the door without a medical emergency.)

3. Use your preferred method of meditating, either pre-read directions or a previously chosen guided meditation. I have an outline from a book I’ve used, but I also have used guided meditations from youtube. The outline is nice if you’re picky about how people’s voices sound, or would prefer silence. The downside is that you may still be able to hear your kids fighting outside your door about whether or not telling mom that YES! New shoes ARE a medical emergency!  Earphones and relaxing music, or a guided meditation will drown teenagers fashion ’emergencies’ out.

4. Do not fall asleep. Just try, ok? Sheesh.

I like to meditate for stress, and information. I’ve found that when I can get centered and quiet, I am open to insights and new ideas that may not have come to me as I was chasing down an 18 month old to wipe a sore nose.  I like to think of this time as when God actually has a chance to tell me something important. I suppose he must get tired of chasing me around all day listening to my daily prayer of:

“HELP!”

🙂

Or maybe not. Maybe he just does what he can with me, hoping I’ll manage some quiet time on Thursday to actually listen to advice.

I’m trying to squeeze in some time on Mondays…I think I can do 10:15 to 11pm…hmmm.

In the meantime, try it. If you need help with anything, ask me anytime, or ask Google. She knows everything. (Hello! Of course Google is a girl. And a mom. Moms know everything. If it was a man, instead of results you would get: Can’t you wait for a commercial? or Do we have any chips?)

Just don’t ask me on Thursday nights, I’m too busy trying to figure out how to relax:)

*snafus may include, but not be limited to, barfing (not you, the kids) crying (mostly kids, sometimes you) sounds of glass breaking, and any emergency yell that includes the words: blood, toilet, or science project due tomorrow.

Sounds like a plan. I will attempt to mediate…Need it now I have a 16-year-old.

  2. LOVE this post. I will try to squeeze it in at 2:00 am when Marlee finally decides she might want to close her eyes and TRY to sleep. 🙂

    Thanks!
