On to my post of the day…

How to hold a class holiday party

1. Be in charge!  It may sound scary but it is not.  It is so much better in the long run.  This way your child won’t be the one asked to bring vegetables every time.  I learned this rule after mr. 13 was asked to bring vegetables to 3 parties in a row, and he cried.  (Since he doesn’t eat vegetables!)  Another bonus is you get to make the majority of the decisions for the party like NO mountain dew for 5-year olds.

2.  Pick a theme!  For the fall party at mr. 8’s class this year we will be doing Owls.  In years past we have done bats, pumpkins, and spiders.  A theme makes it easier for you and the teacher.  The teacher can roll out some theme related lesson plans leading up to the party.  Less work for you!  Also tell other parents the theme, they will surprise you with their creative additions.

3.  Pick a food theme!   It may sound the same but it is not!  Some food theme examples are hot dogs or nachos or an ice cream sundae  party.  This prevents too much sugar or junk food.  Less food is wasted this way and it is less expensive for everyone involved.

4.  Delegate!  This is probably the most important rule.  Delegate the food assignments.  Delegate the reminder calls.  Delegate the craft supplies or decorations.  Do not attempt to do it all yourself.  I have and it is not any fun!  You will be exhausted and your family will hate school parties!

5.  Take lots of pictures!  Your little one may only be in kindergarten right now but in a few short years, the school will start asking for pictures of the kids graduating in 2021!  You will want to be ready with fun pictures.

6.  Say NO!  This may sound funny since so many of you have figured out I am not good at saying no.  This no is different.  This is saying NO to 4 dozen bright blue frosted cupcakes!  This is saying NO to every child bringing candy!  NO to red kool-aid and highly sugared caffeinated soda (again, NO Mt. Dew).  NO to the parent who wants to let kindergartners use hot glue guns.

7.  Keep it simple.  If you have a theme and a food theme, it can stay simple and organized.  I have done this for many years and have close to 100 successful school parties under my belt.  You do not need live animals or performers for the kids to have a fun time.

I hope these tips will make you feel more confident to help with school parties!  You can be the room mom and have fun with it.  Good luck!

I am off to search for Owl related crafts and goodies!
