I cannot stop reading Gone With the Wind.
I sit down to nurse Tiny Baby, pick up that book, and before I know it, time has fled. I look at the clock with astonished bewilderment, and I wonder- what are my other girls up to? What should I be doing? Does anyone have any clean underwear or socks?
That is how almost all of yesterday went and today I am doing the same thing. I cannot stop myself.
Generally, I don’t reread a lot of books, but everytime I read Gone With the Wind, I want to read it again. I know it is flawed, horribly racist for one thing, but I just can’t put it down. If I read it again, maybe Scarlett will give up Ashley. Maybe Rhett will admit he loves her. Maybe she will finally see that she loves Rhett and that he has been waiting for her to realize it all this time! Maybe it won’t have that same, terrible unsatisfying ending that leaves you sitting, breathless, gripping the book, unable to believe that there isn’t one more page left to turn! If only it could be different this time!
Oh, the sweeping drama of it all!
I am putting the book down now, for a few moments, to do some work in the kitchen. Dear Husband wants watermelon soup for dinner (I’ll let you know how that turns out!) and I’ve read that it tastes better if it sits. Plus, I probably do need to check in on my girls and feed them or something. But I will be hurrying through these things because I have absolutely got to get back to the book- Rhett just walked in the door after being gone for 3 months without even a letter to Scarlett and I’m dying to see what happens next!
I haven’t ever read it. I’ll have to give it a try. (I did love the movie though 🙂
I’m a BIG encore reader…and have read GWTW many times (not for years, though). But I’m the same way when I watch The Last of the Mohicans. Please, please, PLEASE let Uncas NOT be killed and Alice not jump off the mountain!!!! But every time I watch it, the same thing happens again.
So the question is…WHY do we watch/read them again and again??? LOL
