So, it’s been quite a week here at the SahmSisters. Went to Vegas, didn’t see a show, came home, blogged about it. Spent the rest of the week dealing with the blog.
Here are my last words (for now) on the Concert That Wasn’t.
I heard about, and read, Barry Manilow’s apology and many of his fan’s comments that followed. It was a lovely explanation/apology (barring the misspelling).
The majority of his fans thought an apology wasn’t necessary, but I’m thinking, if you missed an important appointment, you would apologize, so I, for one, appreciated not only the apology, but also the accompanying explanation. It was nice to hear what the problem actually was.
A friend of mine said that a trip to Las Vegas would be an education. I laughed at the time, thinking that she assumed, being from a somewhat sheltered town and life, I would find The Strip a shocking vista of a very mature world, rampant with licentious and immoral behaviors. (oh my!)
I admit, it is not a ‘G’ rated town.
The education, however, in my assessment, occurred on Monday, when I began reading comments and emails from ‘devoted’ Barry fans.
Here is what I learned:
1. Never, never, never tick off a ‘devoted’ Barry Manilow fan. If you are concerned, I can email you a list of them.
2. If you are ever the unwitting victim of a cancelled performance, I wouldn’t expect much sympathy, except from me, and my friends:)
3. When you are in a concert, take lots of pictures, if they are allowed, immediately, since you never know how long you will be there.
And finally,
4. Always have a Plan B in Vegas…it’s a very unpredictable, wily place.
I am a Barry Manilow liker (‘someone who likes’…I made that up:)). I hesitate to use the word ‘fan’ because I’ve seen them, and I’m not sure about them.
I like his music, his hair, his smile, and his albums. Barry Manilow is a very talented guy, and I hope he is feeling better. If by some miracle, he hears about or reads or sees this little blog, I hope he realizes that I only wanted to see a wonderful show and was thwarted in that endeavor. I am not criticizing his talents, or his abilities as a performer.
AND he should be sure he has an excellent security team, because some of those women might be a “taco short of a combo plate”.
And now we return to our regular scheduled programming….
ROFLMAO……..Just so you know, MY taco’s on the plate, it’s just missing the chopped tomato and lettuce! Love ya, Maren!!!!
“taco short of a combo plate” hahahaha! Glad that you can keep your sense of humor! 🙂
A “taco short of a combo plate” is putting it mildly. His security is pretty good, but what he really needs is security to protect the “likers” from the “fans”.
Thanks for ALL the smiles the last few days, and for the opportunity to get to know you.
Seriously! But when I heard that phrase, I could not resist!:) Some of the responses have been just plain crazy:) It came to me last night, as I was thinking this whole Barry-Bonanza over, that the word ‘fan’ is short for ‘fanatic’…I think that says a LOT, and is a major reason I shall remain a ‘liker’!
You are right…I think I might have to remain a “liker” as well. If you are interested in reading about fans and fandom, you should take a look at blogilow.com (which was originally a Manilow blog) but vamped into a fandom expose.
Very interesting site!:)
I am definitely only a liker not a fan. I enjoyed reading blogilow.com though. 🙂
Wow. I just read the comments on your other post. It took me 20 minutes. Yikes! I’m curious as to how so many people that are fans of Barry Manilow, that don’t know you, happened to find your blog just for this topic. Were they searching for things to rebuttal on? And golly, are people not allowed to have feelings? There is nothing wrong with you being able to state (on your OWN blog) that you are disappointed. If they didn’t like it, perhaps they should read a blog of someone who was elated that the concert was cancelled–though, since they are fans, that wouldn’t make sense. Being a fan, it’s only understandable that you were extremely disappointed, to the point of tummy ache. Been there, have much sympathy for you.
Hello Jillian!:) I know, right? Don’t you just feel like this whole thing is so nuts?? Where the heck is the compassion? The sympathy?:) A few women, most of whom have been ostracized by the ‘devoted fans’ have been so kind. I have received many emails from women too afraid to comment, for fear of the negative results. Seriously? I admit, I’m astonished by every response, including the ones from the “Manilow Camp”. I guess I hit a nerve, that’s for sure, and all I did was try to attend one cancelled concert, then blog about it, and… Sheesh!
By the way Maren, I LOVE your sense of humor and I’m actually enjoying your blog. Maybe I could be a Maren…. Liker. what WILL she write about…next? lol
My sisters and I take turns writimg, monday and wednesday are me, tuesday and thursday are carrie, and friday’s are lynn. I have another blog, live and laugh about it, the link is on the side bar. Reb, I liker you too!:) thanks so much:)
this blog came up in a Google blog alert because it had the word Manilow in it and I happened to read it and posted a link on the USENET group alt.fan.Barry-Manilow because someone there was talking about the same thing. I’ve been a Manilow fan for over 30 years..I understood both sides. Manilow’s people read the USENET group so if they didn’t get the google alert, I’m sure they followed the link from there to here. they’re good people. I’ve met Marc before and he’s usually VERY nice. I can say the same about Barry and Garry. Barry does not like to cancel. I know that to be a fact.
Yes I for one think being a Manilow liker is much more safe than a fan… Glad I was able to read about all the drama and not be in it! lol
Thanks for weighing in, stephanie:) you are SO right!
