Geocaching! You’ve gotta try it!

I tend to have a bit of wanderlust.  Since having Tiny Baby, I have been out of the house to go a few places- to church, to the store, to the library- but that is not enough to keep my cabin fever at bay.  I keep daydreaming about driving down the road, heading to some unknown destination.  I hear myself humming that great song from Paint Your Wagon, “I was born, under a wandering star.”  I longingly look at the endless stream of empty diaper boxes in my house, and I want to fill them with my junk, pack up, and move somewhere new again.  I make dinners and lunches with Neil Young singing in my mind, “think I’ll pack it in and buy a pickup, head on down to LA.”

So, needless to say, on Saturday when Dear Husband asked me what we should do with our day, I said, I think I need to ‘get out of Dodge.’  Luckily, Dear Husband understands me quite well and we had no trouble coming up with a plan.  The day before we had both read an article about a little place to eat in a tiny town about 40 minutes from us.  We decided to Geocache our way there!  For those of you who haven’t tried Geocaching, it is treasure hunting.  Other people have hidden little treasures all around and you get to go find them.  Easy, impromptu, ready-made fun!  Dear Husband looked up the area we were heading to on http://www.geocaching.com/, picked up few spots to stop along our way, and we all headed out.

When we told the little girls that we were going treasure hunting again, they were super excited.  (Yay for hearing your kiddos cheer when you tell them how you  will be spending the day!)  We stopped at a couple places that were so easy we barely had to leave the van, and a couple that were more challenging.

One stop in particular turned out to be a pretty big adventure for the short legs of our litttle girls.  The cache was supposed to be near the beginning of a hiking trail, but we accidentally headed down the beginning of the wrong trail and ending up searching far and wide.  All part of the fun, right?

One of our clues was that we would see an interesting tree-

(No doubt we found the tree- this one looked super weird.)  We hiked and searched for an hour or so, but alas, we didn’t find the treasure this time around.

We still had a super great time though.  The girls liked it so much that they all declared they wanted to live in the forest forever!

Maybe they will all grow up with wanderlust, just like their mama.
